He was predeceased by: his parents, John Clinton "Red" and Louise Heard McDow; his daughter Mary Louise McDow; and his brother John Herman McDow. He is survived by: his wife Mary Patricia Rooks McDow of Alexander City; his children, Kerri Cline (Donald) of Dayton, TX and James McDow, Jr. (Melissa) of Oxford; his grandchildren, Clinton Kyle Bryant, Katlyn Olivia Swearingen, Abigail Jo Arias and James Willis McDow; and his siblings, Mary Frances McDow of Roanoke, Kyle Bryant, Will McDow, Greg Wilson, Paul Heard, Jimmy Heard, Kenny Heard, Donnie Calhoun and Chuck Calhoun. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
