He was loved and cherished by many people including: his children, Ed (Val), Joe (Diane), Ken (Tracy), Jane McKee (Cliff) and Edna Harris (Mike); his daughter-in-law Connie; his grandchildren, Shane Lester (Lisa), Tracy Wirtanen (Kent), Donnie McKee (Lara), Janelle Unger (Dave), Tyler Lester, Sara Lester, Steven Lester (Kayla), Ashley Angenent (Ronald), Misty Sieben (Lance), Jodi Lovelock (Skyler), Kaylee O'Connor (Graham) and Nixon Lester; his great grandchildren, Hannah, Carmen Wirtanen, Brooke, Ava Lester, Pyper, Dominic Unger, Mateo McKee, Hunter, Chevelle Sieben, Christain, Gage, Kingston Lovelock and Jayden Hopfe; his sisters-in-law, Iris Lester, Hazel McBride and Kathy Webster; his wife Dorothy; his sons, Robert (Bob) and Doug; his siblings, Don and Doreen Hargrave; his father Day; and also Ken.

With the arrival of COVID and the resulting restrictions at care facilities, Mel's younger daughter, Edna, and her husband, Mike, offered him a 6-week all-inclusive vacation on their acreage, complete with horses, dogs, tons of birds to watch and lots of room to walk, especially on their circular driveway.
