He was predeceased by: his wife Sarah Alice Murphy Messick; his brother Jack Messick; and his siblings-in-law, Jane and Bob Kirby. He is survived by: his daughter Sarah Messick "DeeDee" Champion (J. P.); his grandchildren, Rusty Champion (Sarah) and Parker Champion (Abby); and his siblings, Lucy Heller (George) of Park Ridge, NJ, Jane Murphy Abbeville (Mack), Wiley Messick (Betty) and O'Neal Messick (Mary Hazel).
