He was predeceased by: his parents, George Cooney and Rosetta Cooney; and his son Brian Thomas Cooney. He is survived by: his wife Pamela Cooney; his children, Jim M Cooney, Jennifer Cooney, Stephanie Baxman (John Baxman) and Megan Hicks (Todd Hicks); his grandchildren, Chloe, Brian, Jimmy Cooney, Johnny, Max Baxman, Riley and Brady Hicks; and his siblings, Tom Cooney, Susan Peters and Kathy Stolki.
