He was predeceased by: his parents, William Birrell and Selma Birrell; his former wife Leila Birrell; and his wife Dorothy Duthie. He is survived by: his grandchildren, Eoin, Bryn and Breanna Butler (Christopher); his great grandchildren, Maya, Sylvie and Keegan Birrell (Lyn); his children, Cindy Szczecinski (Larry) of Weyburn, SK, Marlowe Szczecinski (Trina Maas), Shane Szczecinski (Jordan), Kevin Birrell (Fran) of Weyburn, SK, Ashley Birrell (Colton Cleasby) and Lisa Dennis (Boyd); his grandchildren, Caden, Chase, Vann, Barrett and Nicole Sanders; his great grandchild Sloane; his grandson Matt Sanders (Amy); his great grandchildren, Hailey and Ryley; his close friend Joan Klemenz; and also, Emery and Evelyn. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
