He was predeceased by: his parents, John Coates and Christina Coates; and his siblings, Ted Coates, Raymond Coates and Anne Moyse.

He is survived by: his sons, Curtis Scutchings, Douglas Scutchings and Graham Scutchings (Jodie); his grandchildren, Myllissa, April, Krystal, Brittany and Luke; his siblings, Isabele Kresak (Walter) of Yorkton, SK, Carol Miller (Larry) of Cranbrook, BC and Wayne Coates (Louise) of White Rock, BC; and his siblings-in-law, Merle Coates of Wadena, SK and Bob Moyse of Chilliwack, BC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family.
