He was predeceased by: his former wife Sheila Benson; his parents, Carl Benson and Signe Benson; his sister Elsie Isley (Ed); his parents-in-law, Bill and Ada Byers; his sister Margaret Woods (Ernie); his brother-in-law Jack Byers; his father-in-law Chris Bender; and his grandchildren, Kirstin Benson and Brandon Magnuson.

He is survived by: his wife Linda Watson; his children, Gary Benson (Christine), Hal Benson (Shelley), Jeff Benson (Terri) and Shelley Benson; his stepdaughter Lacy Degelman (Todd); his grandchildren, Scott Benson, Melissa Haskell (Josh), Taylor Benson, Jordan Magnuson (Nicole), Kelsey Benson (Chase), Sarah Benson (Justin) and Holt Degelman; his great grandchild Charlotte Haskell; his mother-in-law Irene Bender; and his brother-in-law Calvin Bender (Arlene). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
