He is survived by: his wife Nadia; his sons, Andreas, Martin and Thomas; his sister Maria; and his nieces and nephews, Thomas, Kai, Nina, Anne-Marie and Michelle.

In March 2021, he would have enjoyed a ten-day trip to Cuba, were it not for the havoc wreaked by Covid and the ensuing halts on travel.
