Brian Alexander Ward Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we share news of Brian passing at 76 years of age. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 54 years. Only child of the late Iris (nee Bratton) and Les Ward. Survived by brothers-in-law Albert 'Bud' Thurley (the late Georgina); Richard Gates (Liz); nieces and nephews: Kathy Thurley (Jeff White), Richard Thurley (Christine) Mary Gates (Darryl), Caitlin Thurley, Stephen Parent (Laura), Brandon Parent (Helen), Jonathan Gates, Daniel and Matthew White, Madilyn and Caitlyn Gates, Connor, Caroline and Hannah Parent, and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Brian was born in Ottawa, trained at Algonquin College, and followed in the footsteps of his father, an RCMP officer, for several years prior to joining the Toronto Police Service in 1973. His distinguished career of 33 years included the position of Staff Sergeant while 20 years in Forensic Ident Service. He was recognized as an expert in the field of forensics and DNA as evidenced by the awards bestowed on him. Upon retiring in 2006 he pursued marketing and distribution of DNA test kits, taught CSI and forensic courses at Humber and Durham Community Colleges, and authored several books and podcasts. On weekends he was the drummer for a local band of musicians in Whitby. Always easy to spot with his trademark grin and colourful 'tie dye' t-shirts.
He so enjoyed a fine cigar, his favourite scotch, and good times spent with family, friends and colleagues. But nothing could surpass the years of happiness spent with Dorothy, including their annual golf treks to Myrtle Beach. They met while still in their teens and remained devoted to each other and their many Schnauzer pups. Brian will be sorely missed by all of us whose lives he touched.
Sincere thanks to the dedicated nurses, staff and doctors at Lakeridge Hospital, Oshawa, and St. Mike's Hospital, Toronto for their care. Special thanks to friends and neighbours for their kind generosity and support these past months.
As per Brian's wishes cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Barnes Funeral Home, Whitby. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Humane Society, or your charity of choice would be appreciated.
