He was predeceased by: his brothers, Dieter and Michael; and his half-sister Dorothea. He is survived by: his wife Cornelia "Connie" Scherer; his brother Hans Joachim; his children, Stefan, Sabine, Susanne, Sebastian, Sybille and Svenya; and his caregiver Jennifer. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren.
