He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry B. Pauls and Sara Pauls (Hildebrand). He is survived by: his wife Nancy Anne Pauls (Litwiller); his children, Steffen (Barbara Burkholder) and Joanna (Andrew Weinacht); and his siblings, Elfrieda Snow (Reginald), Rudy (Elizabeth), Walter (Margaret), Werner (Linda) and Rita Sims (Greg). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
