He was loved and cherished by many people including: his spouse Connie DeRoche; his children, Jason (Randee), Jeremy and Katrina Vermeer (Brandon); his parents, Gerard and Margaret; and his siblings, Edward, Larry (Julie), Linda Johnston (Neil), Mary Anne Minard (Brian), Margaret Comfort (Neil) and Annette Scott (Hank). He was also cherished by nieces and nephews.

“As Katrina's violin teacher for many years, I first and foremost remember being so moved by the way Al's face lit up whenever she walked into the room. You could tell that listening to her play the violin gave him unspeakable joy and pride. Al was a kind, supportive and forever encouraging father. He was truly genuine, always putting one at ease and making a person feel good about themselves. Although he will be sorely missed, the world is just a little better off because he was in it.”
