He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Nickel and Tina Nickel (Schmor). He is survived by: his wife Joyce; his children, Marlene Hiebert (Otto), Sandra Whelan (Darrell), Robert (Rose), Philip (Charlotte) and James (Hildy); and his grandchildren, Heather and Derrick. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
