He is survived by: his siblings, Doug Hakala (Lissa) and Barbara Garofalo (James); his nephew Nicholas Hakala; his nieces, Grace Hakala, Elizabeth Garofalo and Sarah Garofalo; and his aunt Maureen Dickey.
