He was predeceased by: his wife Dorothy McLennan; his parents, Eerik Kansala and Vieno Esteri Kansala; and his siblings, Lisa Cindric (Matias) and Sauli (Janet).

He is survived by: his sisters, Sonja Ferlotte (Allan) and Anne-Maarit Hernesniemi (Tarmo). He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
