He was predeceased by: his spouse Doris Van Velzer (Somerville); his children, Sandra Hales (late Herb Hales) and Kenneth Van Velzer; his siblings, Don, Stan and Nora Brooks; and his parents, Fred Velzer and Elva Van Velzer (Williams).

He is survived by: his child James (Angela Van Velzer) of Dorchester; his grandchildren, Robert, Joshua and Emma; and his sibling Margaret Kenny of Pembroke. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
