He is survived by: his grandchildren, Jasmine, Adam and Malcolm; his former wife Janice Sims-Farrell; his siblings, Rita, Kathleen, Garnet, Terrence, Charmaine and Carlyle; and his girlfriend Lorna Wiggan. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Vernon's name to the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora at York University.

“A very soft spoken man until you get him angry. I've been on the side both sides of his personality while he was my principal at Brookview middle school. But i can honestly say he was a man i did respect.”
