He was predeceased by: his sister Grace Van Halteren (late Bill); his parents, Maartje Stegenga (Reinbergen) and Johannes "John" Stegenga; and his brother Ben Stegenga (late Janny). He is survived by: his wife Ruth Ellen (Nelson) of Powassan; his children, Joan of City, Peter Schelling of City, Rob of City, Jen Stegenga of City, James of City and Ashley Stegenga of City; his grandchildren, Jacob MacEachern, Anna Schelling (Sam Tyler), Paul Schelling, Austin Stegenga and Chloe Stegenga; his great grandchild Dakota MacEachern; his siblings, Hilda Nettinga (late Bill) and Henny Albers (Henk); his brother-in-law David Nelson (Normajean) of City; and his sister Ann Cook (late Kevin) of Plainfield.
