He was predeceased by: his mother Bella Watson of Dalesboro, Saskatchewan; and his brothers, Donald (Eleanor) and Garth (Dorothea). He is survived by: his wife Arlene; his sister Roxena; his children, Dr. Kelly Ross Johnston (Susan) and Rae Arlene Ellis (Ron); and his grandsons, Daniel Lester Ellis (Ina Popovic) and Christopher Glen Ellis (Kassidy Czerniak). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was a passionate supporter of the Calgary Foundation.
