Ruth Marilyn (Walker) Winter Obituary
The family of Ruth Winter, is deeply saddened to announce her passing at the age of 80, on October 20th, 2018, peacefully at home surrounded by family. Ruth was the beloved mother of Stewart and Tom Winter, a wonderful mother by marriage to their wives, Margot and Ruth, and a loving and adored Grandmother to Kaitlin, Jason, Brenna and Monica.
Ruth is predeceased by her father, Laurence, and siblings Fran, Alfred, Jack, Howard, Anna, and Roy, and is survived by her sister, Grace Smith. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Ruth was born in Truro and raised in Summerville, Nova Scotia -- the youngest of 8 children. She worked as a nurse in both Halifax and Ottawa.
Her lifelong passion for learning earned her a BSc in Nursing from the University of Ottawa in 1981 and motivated her to travel the world, including hiking from Kathmandu to the base camp on Mount Everest and the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. She remained active and adventurous until her final days. A strong woman, full of character, she enjoyed music, biking, swimming, skiing, square dancing, playing bridge, board games and bragging about her grandchildren.
Ruth had a unique sense of humour and a fierce loyalty for the people she loved. The family would like to thank Dr. Boyd, Dr. Verma and the nursing staff at the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre, as well as the Bayshore Home Health nurses, who assisted with maintaining Ruth's quality of life all the way to the end. A private service for family will be held at a later date in her beloved Nova Scotia.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Ottawa's uOttawa Research Fund would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
