John Jones wrote a sympathy message

“My boyhood hero when as a 15 year old I used to marvel at his great time trialling successes at speeds in that time seemed impossible by human endeavour. I followed his career avidly, World Champion on the track and so many other great achievements. He sure was an inspiration to me although I never personally had the pleasure of meeting him in person. Rest in peace Norman, your cycling achievements will never be forgotten by my generation and many other generations too. My condolences to your family and friends at this sad time.”

“My condolences to the family and all the cycling world on whom Norm had an impact. Norm was a gentleman, the sweetest man with ladies and a fantastic coach. He is the one who made me believe it was possible. He taught me that training for a specific event was not that complicated. I have phrases that Norm told me that I often use like: Jacques the day you think you are good and you stop listening and learning your are done. » or that day at a restaurant to a waitress «  as anyone told you today that you were beautiful? ». Have a good flight Norm, you’re in my thoughts regularly and you had a great impact on me as an athlete but also as a man. Sheers Norm!”

“Norman, we have known each other and been friends for nigh on seventy years. In that time you became, against many odds, one of Britain’s greatest athletes, achieving such tremendous success in the world of track cycling. After competitive retirement you took those achievements and knowledge into the world of coaching, firstly in Britain and then across to our great friends in Canada. As is way of all flesh you have now departed this mortal coil but we all know that you will be welcomed in another place. You will never be forgotten by those who knew you. God Bless. Bill Soens.”

“My condoléance to all his family and close friends around the world. He was a great gentleman full of good humour a great Olympic and National Coach. He did everything for me and the National Team level and for the Canadian Cycling Association. I’m so greatful to Norman for bringing me to the international cycling level by pushing me to my first gold medal at the Pan Am Ganes of 1979 and other events. I am regretting him and never forget in my taught. God bless you Norman....”
