He was predeceased by: his wife Lena; his grandson Corey; and his sisters, Leentje, Jacoba, Maria and Eva.

He is survived by: his children, Lane Byl (Margaret), Casey Byl (Valerie), May Simpson (Alan), Richard Byl (Linda) and Marinus Byl (Beverley); his grandchildren, Marlena, Jason, Sarah, Melissa, Derek, Cassandra, Lane, Christopher and Whitney; his stepgrandchildren, Brett, Maureen, Ben, Dustin, Sarah, Jade and Jared; and his siblings, Hendrika, Marinus, John, Pauline and Adriana. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
