He was predeceased by: his first love Margaret; his second love Ulrike; his brother-in-law Irené Vermeire; and his siblings, Achiel (Mariette), Maria (André Broekhove), Madeleine (Maurice Van), Suzanne (Maurice Verlee) and Anna (Raphaël T'Hooft).

He is survived by: his sister Martha Vermeire; his children, Ken (Elly) and Kathy (Jim Kirk); his stepson Juergen Fruehwirth; his grandchildren, Jeanine (Ryan Nicholson), Derek (Sara Doyle), Jacob (Avery Beaton), Raquel (Greg Hodgins), Dylan (Bree), Chantelle (Maël Thibault), Bridgette, Nathaniel Freeman, Tatyanna Freeman, Christopher Kirk (Morgan Blizzard) and Justin Kirk (Sarah); and his great grandchildren, Bowen, Everleigh, Wyatt, Kennedy and Knox. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews.
