He was predeceased by: his grandson James. He is survived by: his children, Mike (Laura) and Melissa; his grandchildren, Wini, Rebecca (late Jon), Kalli (Dylan), Megan, Andrew, Mark and Matthew; and his great grandchildren, Theo and Wesley.

Visitation was held on Sunday, January 19th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Henry Walser Funeral Home Ltd. (507 Frederick St, Kitchener, ON N2B2A5). A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 19th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

“I'm very sorry to hear of Hugh's passing. I met Hugh in the Waterloo-Wellington paddling club, and admired and shared his appreciation of nature and of being in it within a canoe. He liked big stories and a good laugh, and had a ready smile. I particularly recall him enjoying leading a paddle on the Maitland (2017, I think) where we saw so many migrating birds, and lunched sitting on the snow on the river bank.
