He was predeceased by: his son John Groen; his parents, John Groen and Fenna Groen; and his sibling Eddie. He is survived by: his wife Sharon; his children, Richard Groen, Jeannette Taranto (Vito) and Shari Mannsfeldt (David); his daughter-in-law Tracy Groen; his grandchildren, Brianna, Dustin (Darby), Brendan, Allyshia, Jacqueline, Joseph and Nathan; and his siblings, Allan (Barb), Rose, Keith (Wyn), Jim (Rayma), Anne Jan (Zuzana) and Yvonne (Peter).
