He was predeceased by: his former wife Viola "Vi"; his son Stephen Johnston (Cathy); his parents, John Johnston and Mary Agnes Johnston; his brother Joe (Jean); his friend Viola MacDonald; and also Mae.
He is survived by: his children, Donna Whalen (John), Greg Johnston (Julie), Cheryl Hachey (Chris), Sherry MacDonald (Bill Vigars), Jody MacDonald, Gail Hayes (Peter), Gary MacDonald (Tracy) and Treasured; his grandchildren, Scott, Kyle, Sarah, Leah, Andrew, Matthew, Eric, Jordan, Kayla, Dorian, Jayde, Hayden, Landon, Hannah and Alyssa; his great grandchild Kylan Michael Boyd; his sisters, Isabel and Peggy (late Jack); and his wife Mae Kennedy (Dobbs). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
