He was predeceased by: his child Joey; his grandchild Laurie; his great grandchild Theodore; his siblings, Fien, Sjaan, Nies, Jan and Wim; his siblings-in-law, Kees, Sjef, Drik, Jan and Johanna; and his parents, Peter Riel and Clasina Van Riel.

He is survived by: his wife Helen (DeGroot); his children, Pete Van Riel (Dorothy), Cindy Melton (Chuck), Simon Van Riel (Frances), Mary Elliott (Kevin), Josy Royackers (Gil) and JoAnn Vander Viloet (Frank); his grandchildren, Paula, Brian, Kristy, David, Katie, Dayna, Nikki, Stacey, Jaime, Cindy, Joel, Mike, Leanne, Brad, Eric, Joey, Johnny, Jennifer and Kevin; his sisters, Jo and Riet; and his sisters-in-law, Riet, Annie, Leny and Mary. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
