He was predeceased by: his parents, John Joseph Gardiner Sr. and Leona Gardiner; his great-grandparent Austin; and his siblings, Jane Earl and Gerry Gardiner.

He is survived by: his spouse Arnette Gardiner; his children, Cheryl Gardiner (Reg Gristey), Kelly Gardiner (Ron Pickel), John Gardiner (Zhang Jian), Michael Gardiner (Christine Wellenreiter) and Heather Gardiner (Jesse Crawford); his grandchildren, Lindsay McKay (Adam Stan), Michelle Braconnier (Rory Braconnier), Luke McKay, Mitchell Gardiner, Brooke Crawford, Justin Crawford and Josh Robins; his sister Margaret Ann "Maggie" McGee; and his close friend Dan Kelly.
