He was predeceased by: his parents, Karl Schmidt and Helene Schmidt; and his wife Christina. He is survived by: his siblings, Peter, Jochen and Renate; his daughters, Helen (David) and Petra; and his stepchildren, Lisa (Alec) and Andrew. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren.
