He was predeceased by: his parents, James Hay and Mary Bell; his wife Wanda Patterson; and his siblings, Ruby Hay, Carol Scharfe and Mansel.
He is survived by: his sons, Ian (Kathleen) and Gordon (Carol); his grandchildren, Ryan (Lindsay), Matthew, Lauren, David and John; his great grandchildren, Winston, Abigail and Edward; his brother-in-law Ken Scharfe; and his nieces, Sharon Scharfe and Rosemary Kane.
