He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Marjorie Frances Mertl; his children, Christine Gertrude Welling (Fred), Victoria Frances Busner (Charles), Richard Alan (Randi), John David (Catherine) and Theodore Joseph (Kelly); his granddaughters, Amanda Leigh (Boun), Allison Jayne (Sean), Sarah-Anne, Meghan and Ashley; his great grandchild Mila; his nephew Steve (Madeleine); his sister Trudy Spika; and his parents, Josef Mertl and Mathilde Mertl.

As expressions of sympathy donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute would be appreciated by the family.
