He was predeceased by: his parents, Jean Elizabeth Wootton and Frederick James Mahaffy; and his brother David. He is survived by: his friend Leslie Wheeler; his siblings, Pat (John Jared) and Paul; and his nieces and nephews, Diane, Debra, Angela, Linda, Mike, Wayne, Judy, Stephanie, Kathy, Miles, Robert, Zac, Erin, Anna, Luke and Moya.
In 2003, Jim was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, an award given to persons who have made a significant contribution to Canada, to their community, or to their fellow Canadians. He also received the Community Action Award from Hilary Weston, Ontario Lieutenant Governor, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Province of Ontario.
