He was predeceased by: his wife Dianne; his parents, Etta Shantz and Lloyd Shantz; his parents-in-law, Irvin and Helen Brubacher; and his niece Emilee.

He is survived by: his sons, Troy (Cory) and Brent (Leigh Anne Swayne); his grandchildren, Claire and Cameron Shantz; his siblings, Murray Shantz (Carol), Carolyn Wideman (Howie) and Linda Shantz-Keresztes (Lou); and his siblings-in-law, Linda Bender (Ken), Pat Klassen (Art) and Jennifer Horne (Gord Hammer). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
