He is survived by: his wife Margaret; his children, Bill Bates (Amie Bates) and Jaclyn Bates (Stephan Meloche); his grandchildren, Declan Hines, Ava Hines and Quinn Bates; his sister Joan Rayner (Fred Rayner); his cousins, Ruth Bednar, Ron Duffield, Anne Bates MacNilage, Bonnie Bates Forsythe, Jamie Bates, Barry Bates, Brian Bates, Betty Bates, Ron Bates, Robert Carley, Rennie Carley, Laurie Bruce, Brevitt Buckingham, Stefan Buckingham and Edna Buckingham; his aunts and uncles, Shirley Bates, Margaret Bates and John Carley; and his siblings-in-law, Fred Rayner, Greg, John Best, Susan, Marcella Best and Mary Ellen Cote.
