He was predeceased by: his parents, Allan MacPhail and Ada MacPhail; and his brothers, Arnold and Gordon. He is survived by: his children, Ada (Shawn) and Edmonton; his former wife Margaret McCarthy; his siblings, Alda Woods (Lynn), Lower Sackville, Frances MacPherson (Earle) and Hugh MacPhail (Natalie); his sister-in-law Rena MacPhail; and his grandchildren, Chelsea, Cole MacPhail-McGee and Leelee Boucher. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations in memory of Donald John may be made to Upper River Denys Cemetery Fund or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
