He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis Hanes and Helen Hanes (Henniger); his sister Charlene Thomson; his brothers-in-law, Jim Thomson and Michael Densmore; and his great-nephew Jordan Weatherbee.

He is survived by: his daughter Erica (Mark) of Debert; his grandson Chance; his friends, Tookey and Pippi; his wife Joan; his son Nick Miller of Halifax; his siblings, Vance (Ann) of Upper Kennetcook, Laura Densmore of Upper Kennetcook and Rose (Edmund) of Upper Kennetcook; and his grandchildren, Danica and Lucas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
