He was predeceased by: his parents, Ramon Garbes and Encarnacion Garbes (Garcia). He is survived by: his wife Fran; his daughters, Amy Davidson (Stefan) and Renee Garbes; his grandchildren, Jordan Garbes and Claire Davidson; his siblings, Michele and Paul-Henri; and his son Paul Garbes.

Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia or to the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
