He was predeceased by: his sister Sharon; and his parents, Vivian Murphy (MacDonald) and William Murphy. He is survived by: his significant other Theresa "Terry" Murphy (Donovan); his son Dereck (Julie); his grandchildren, Cole of Alberta and Camryn of Alberta; his goddaughter Jenna Arsenault (Donovan); his brothers, William, Matthew (Bonnie) and Sydney; his mother-in-law Mary Donovan (Albert Bridge); his siblings-in-law, Debbie Dixon (Roy) and Wilfred Donovan Jr.; his friend Neil McSween; and his pet Maggie May. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Centre or the An Cala Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
