He was predeceased by: his parent Hugh Gillis. He is survived by: his parent Florence Isobel MacInnis (Irwin); his former wife Sandra; his grandchildren, Michael, Samuel, Ruth and Caleb; and his brother David (Lauren Racicot).
Consistent with his tendency to help others when he could, Irwin donated his body to Dalhousie Medical School's Human Body Donation Program to assist in the education of the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals.
