He was predeceased by: his parents, Neil Ferguson and Isabel Ferguson (Morrison); and his brothers, Kenneth, Robert Gordon and Ralph.

He is survived by: his wife Anne; his children, Caron Eagan (Patrick) of Dartmouth, Brent (Heather) and Annette Whitehead (Jim) of Pictou; his grandchildren, Charlotte, Bronwyn, Colin Eagan, Gavin Ferguson, Nora Ferguson, Jacob Whitehead and Bruce Whitehead; and his siblings, Ron Ferguson (Donna) of Glace Bay and Diane MacDiarmid (Ron) of Hamilton, ON. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pictou United Church, the VON Pictou County, or CHAD Transit.
