He was predeceased by: his parents, Hillary Merritt and Adele Merritt (Poirier); and his sisters, Geraldine, Pauline, Elaine and Bernadette.
He is survived by: his brother Kelvin Joseph Merritt; his children, Jim Merritt (Debi) of Sydney Mines, Marilyn Merritt of Havre Boucher and Juliette Merritt (Robert) of Havre Boucher; his grandchildren, Keri Merritt, Chris Merritt, Colin Cross, Luca Fabbian and Finn Neal; his stepgrandchildren, Robbie Hollingsworth and Bobbi-Jo Green; his siblings, Billy Merritt (Emma) of Sydney Mines, Enid Williams of North Sydney, Jacqueline Armstrong of North Sydney and Delores Tobin (Ernie) of Ontario; and also Shirley Yetter (Brown) of Havre Boucher.
