She was predeceased by: her parents, Alex MacKinnon and Mary MacKinnon (Carpenter); and her sister Linda Mackinnon (John). She is survived by: her husband Jim "Fred"; her children, Brandon (Jenn) and Brooke (Ray); her grandchildren, James and Justis; and her sisters, Leanna (Rocky), Madonna (Rob) and Alexis (Mike). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Donations in memory of Margaret can be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
