She was predeceased by: her parents, William Fitzgerald and Josephine Fitzgerald (Matthews); her grandparents, Jane and Michael Matthews of Duntara; her husband Irvin Brooks; her son Gary; and her siblings, Winifred Nolan (Peter) and Leslie Fitzgerald (Gigi).
She is survived by: her close friends, Alberta Devoe and Marina Newman; her nieces, Jean and Loretta; her stepbrother Mike (Barb); her children, Ward (Debbie), Jason (Amy) and Lynn Ivey (Ron) of North Sydney; her grandchildren, Carly Ivey, Haley Ivey (Larkey), Jason, Brandon and Kaydon Brooks; and her great grandchild Abigail. She is also survived by step-brothers and step-sisters, many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces.
Memorial Donations in Joan's memory can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or to a charity of choice.
