He was predeceased by: his parents, James Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Fitzgerald (MacIsaac); and his siblings, Ed, Robert, Huey, Margaret, Mary, Hazel, Winnie, Theresa and Ruby.

He is survived by: his wife Mildred "Millie" (Flavin); his children, Sandra (Judy), Tim, Gerald Jr. (Rose), Pamela (Angela) and Kevin; and his son-in-law Gerald Sullivan. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations in memory of Gerald may be to Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 81 Guysborough or Guysborough Memorial Hospital.
