He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Mitton and Sarah Ann Mitton; his daughter Janet Steller (Tom); his siblings, Vernon Mitton and Jacqueline French (Eric); and his grandson Daniel Mitton.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy; his children, Elizabeth Mitton-Poole (Robert), David Mitton (Laura) and Jonathan "Jon" Mitton (Angela); and his grandchildren, Timothy, Simon, Adam Poole, Christopher, Andrew Mitten, Michael, Matthew Steller, Erica and Ian Mitton. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations in Malcolm's memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Canadian Cancer Society.
