Patrick Emmett Berrigan Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Patrick Emmett Berrigan, age 52, on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Patrick was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, and raised in Dartmouth. He was the son of Diana (Sweet) and the late Ralph Berrigan.

Patrick loved to tell jokes, but most times his delivery was funnier than the punchline. He loved music and could often tell you within the first few notes, who the singer was, what album it was on and year the song came out. He was also a huge movie buff. He loved going to the movies, especially with his long-time best friend, Mark.

Patrick was a man of adventure and was always willing to try something new. These experiences included our two trips to Disney World with our nephews, getting lost going to Lake Louise and ending up in BC, a summer scavenger hunt that took us from Sydney to Yarmouth, a "quick" trip to Canso on our way home from Cape Breton that took us 8 hours, and taking a "leap of faith" with his buddy, Phil, as he tried to jump into the kayak, bounced off the back, and into the water while yelling, "I'm OK!". He was game for anything.

Patrick enjoyed spending time with his nephews, AJ & Ryan Berrigan, Tyler Hibbert, and nieces, Amy & Megan Bateman, Samantha Taylor, and Elizabeth Simon. He loved them all so much and had wonderful relationships with each of them that evolved as they grew. Over the years they had different names for their uncle Pat like "Uncle Patsy", "Uncle Patterson", "Uncle Raintree", "Uncle Monkey Butt", "Patricko", and "Uncle Poodle". He loved each name.

Patrick could always bring a smile to someone's face. Just his presence and demeanor could put people at ease. Every day was something new with Patrick. You could never be sure what story he was going to tell. Most days, when I would get home from work, Pat would start with, "How was your day?". I'd tell him, and then he'd say, "Well, I did something stupid today" and proceed to tell his story of misadventure. He was always good for a laugh.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Shauna (Syms), mother, brother, Paul (Shelley), his nephews and nieces, as well as his chosen nephew and niece, Joseph and Ava Anderson. Patrick is also survived by his in-laws, Steven (Jennifer), Clifford (Frances), Robin (Shauna), Donna, Alice, Leisa (John), mother-in-law, Louise Dobbin, many aunts and uncles, and his good friends, Frank, Phil, Amie, Vance, Jodi, Natalia, Mark, Claire, Traci.

Besides his father, Patrick was predeceased his grandparents, Joseph & Margaret Sweet, and John "Biff" & Elizabeth Berrigan, uncles Joseph Sweet Jr. and Emmett Berrigan, aunts, Peggy Williams, Mary Sponagle, and Eleanor (Bubs) Berrigan, father-in-law, Eddie Syms.

We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of kindness you've shown our family in this shocking and tragic time. We'd especially like to thank the staff of the Shearwater Children's Centre and the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre, as well as the staff at DASC for being so supportive. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Thomas More Church, 15 Caledonia Road, Dartmouth, with a reception to follow in the church basement.

Patrick worked at DASC (Dartmouth Adult Services Centre). He loved going to work every day and loved the staff and clients he worked with. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to DASC in Patrick's name at https://www.dasc-ns.ca Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: http://www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca.
