He was predeceased by : his parents, George Stirling and Catherine Stirling (MacDonald); and his brothers, George and James. He is survived by : his wife Elaine Sterling (Roberts); his sons, Robert (Marie) and Stephen (Bee); his siblings, Marie Strickland, Ron, Ralph and Don; and his grandchildren, Tanner and Braelyn Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
