He was predeceased by: his parents, Earnest Barnes and Mary Barnes (Miller). He is survived by: his wife Carmie; his sons, Michael (Susie) and Chris (Emily); and his siblings, Mildred, Robert (Marta) and Judith (Peter). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

“Don was a good friend and colleague , we knew one another for 20 years , I was in Vancouver and Don in Halifax , I first met Don in the early 1990's where he spent time with me training me on various pieces of equipment when I first started my work with Honeywell / Sperry Marine , We would meet for yearly training sessions in Sperry Cho . Our after hours dinners were great as we both shared many stories , jokes and observations of life . We had many good laughs , Those were happy good times !”
