He was predeceased by: his parents, William Roy and Mary Pickings (Lownds); and his sister Marion. He is survived by: his wife Mary (Dauphinee); and his children, Carol Pickings-Anthony (Greg), David (Judy Tanner), Sally (Frank Slauenwhite), Brian (Alice) and Janet Silva (Poyo). He is also survived by three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

“I met Mel in 1965. This dear Man was an absolute joy for a young landed immigrant, fresh off the boat. I was the rep for the Michelin Tire Company.. After a few hours of fun, as only Mel could arrange, he agreed to become a dealer.. This several years before Michelin hit Nova Scotia. Our path crossed many times over the years. Mel helped me sail my new boat from Halifax to Chester in 1983. This was a true Gentleman in every sense.. Mike Prangnell.”
