He was predeceased by: his parents, Daniel Layes and Dorothy Layes (Hemmings); his wife Shirley Layes (Bowie); and his siblings, John Bernard, Lawrence, Francis, Alexander, Daniel, Alex, Laura, Marilyn and Carole.
He is survived by: his daughters, Brenda and Sandra Dort (John); his grandchildren, Bryden, Leah Delorey and Chelsea Dort; his great grandchild Luca Dort; and his siblings, Melvin (Doris), Jimmy, Berkley (Trudy) and Aileen (Gerard). He is also survived by many nieces and, nephews.
